You’ve heard people say it. Make your web site “search engine friendly”. But what does that mean?

Well, the first step to building a search engine friendly web site is to read and understand the search engine guidelines. The ones you need to be the most familiar with are:

If you understand what these search engines are looking for and how they index information then you will be much more able to ensure that your web site meets the search engine friendly standards that are acceptable today.

You must understand that the search engines are there to help you. They are not your enemy. Their primary concern is to help searchers find the information they are looking for. Your job as webmaster and website owner is to help the search engines help searchers find that information. To the extent that you do that well and are operating within the guidelines for content and development standards, to that degree you will be successful online. That’s when you know that you have a search engine friendly web site.
