The Four Types Of Mailing Lists

March 28th, 2008 Posted in Effective Promotion Through Publicly Accessible Mailing

You’ve already been introduced to them through this blog. The four types of mailing lists are:

  • Publicly Accessible Mailing Lists
  • Direct Mail Lists
  • Private Mail Lists
  • Bulk Mail Lists

But which type of mailing list is right for you? At some point, you’ll likely need to use all of these. But right now, let’s focus on publicly accessible mailing lists.

There are two types of publicly accessible mailing lists – moderated and unmoderated.

A moderated mailing list is one that is maintained by a person who filters out unwanted or inappropriate messages. If you try to post an advertisement or content that is inappropriate for the group, the moderator will delete it. It will never be seen.

An unmoderated mailing list is one that is open and has no central authority or control. No one censors the messages and there is no telling what you’ll find. Many publicly accessible mailing lists fall into this category because moderating a list can be time consuming and it could be hard to find a volunteer to do it. In an unmoderated mailing list, you’ll have to police your own actions and flame wars – people shouting at each other – are not uncommon. It’s up to the entire community to make sure spammers, flamers, and trolls do not take over.

Both types of publicly accessible mailing lists can be beneficial to your tourism business. And you can develop relationships and contacts that can help you expand your business in a publicly accessible mailing list.
