Planning your web site is the most important part of doing business on the Internet. The planning stage is where you fail or succeed. Proper planning determines so many other things about your web site so it behooves you to spend some time planning before you start designing or doing anything else.

What should you think about in the planning process? It’s almost a no-brainer really:

  • You should define your objectives - What is your web site about? What do you want it to do for you?
  • Define your target market - Who do you expect to benefit from you web site? What are their needs and desires? How old are they? Where do they live, eat, shop? You need to know about about your target market as is feasible at this stage of your planning.
  • Develop an Internet marketing strategy for your product or service - It isn’t enough to say you are a tourism company. Define it. What aspect of tourism are you involved in? Do you give historical tours? Do you provide transportation for a tourism company? Do you sell tickets for tours? Each tourism company will have a specific niche and there are Internet marketing strategies that are more effective for particular types of companies. You should develop your strategy to match your company and industry. That includes taking into consideration the geographic area of your tourism-related product or service.

How you answer each of these critical questions will determine to a great deal how successful you are in your planning and in the implementation of your web site design and Internet marketing.
