Storyboard Your Web Site Before You Build It

May 5th, 2008 Posted in Planning Your Web Site

It’s a good idea when planning your web site to write up a storyboard. The storyboard essentially serves the same function as a storyboard for a movie production. In a movie storyboard, the scenes are drawn up and put in the order of their appearance in the film, but they could be filmed in any order. They’ll be put where they belong in the editing process.

The same process works pretty well for websites. Build your plan first. Know how all the pages to your website will relate to each other before you build it. Then when it comes time to build your website you can follow the storyboard and build the pages in any order, putting them where they belong according to the plan. Here is a rundown of the type of information that you need to include in your storyboard:

  • Keywords used for each web page
  • Which pages of your web site link to which other pages
  • Outline of the content on each page
  • Graphics you will use on each page of your site
  • Anchor text you plan to use for each page
  • How you will market each page of your web site

Storyboarding isn’t difficult and it can save you a lot of time and headache in the long run because you will know how all of your pages fit together before you start building your web site. That’s pretty important information.
