Podcasting: Online Radio For The People

April 20th, 2008 Posted in Podcasting

Podcasting is a term that was coined a few years ago and comes from the terms broadcasting and iPod. Podcasting is the distribution of audio content for listening on personal computers, MP3 players, or other mobile devices.

Podcasting is all about creating content for a demanding audience that does not want to be marketed to, but rather wants to listen to what they want, when they want, and how they want.

In this and future blog posts we’ll discuss:

  • What podcasting is
  • Podcast mechanics
  • Podcast content
  • Promoting your podcast

The term podcasting is a little misleading because, although it comes from the words broadcasting and iPod, it has nothing directly to do with Apple iPods. Podcasting, in its simplest, relates to audio content that can be listened to on your personal computer, any MP3 player (not just the Apple iPod), and many mobile devices. The term has also been used to relate to video content that can be downloaded and viewed at your convenience as well; others use the term videocasting for such content.

Podcasts can be downloaded from the source web site on an individual basis or can be subscribed to through an RSS feed. When a site makes audio or video content available through an RSS feed, you can subscribe to the content. As new audio or video files are made available, subscribers get notification in their RSS reader; the reader will download the content to a location the subscriber has specified on his or her hard drive. When a subscriber connects a mobile device or MP3 player to his or her computer, the files can be added to that device for future listening or viewing.
