Where To Begin Your Directory Submission Process

March 11th, 2008 Posted in Search Engine and Directory Submissions

The first place you should submit your web site, before you submit anywhere else, is DMOZ, also called the Open Directory Project.

The ODP is a free, human-edited directory. In fact, it is the largest human-edited directory online and the most important. The reason this directory is so important is because it has a high PageRank (8) and many of the search engines get information about web sites from this directory, including Google. That alone makes submitting to DMOZ well worth your time.

To submit your web site to the ODP is free. It doesn’t cost anything but your time. You’ll have to research the categories and make absolutely sure that you submit your web site to the proper category. This is very important because if you submit to the wrong category then your web site may not get listed at all. And they won’t contact you to let you know that your web site isn’t getting listed!

It takes at least six months to get listed at DMOZ and could take as long as a year or more. But it is worth the wait. Your DMOZ listing could be a good source of traffic and it will be a long lasting high value inbound link as well. Since it is human edited, the process takes a long time to complete and the editors do not have time to correct erroneous information or notify webmasters of problems to fix. If there is a major issue with your submission, they will likely just not list you and you’ll never know. So be sure that you fill out their submission form correctly and don’t include anything about your web site that isn’t true.
