The True Importance Of Web Traffic Analysis
May 1st, 2008 Posted in Web Traffic AnalysisWhen it comes to analyzing web traffic, there are certain metrics that you want to look for. Obviously, traffic patterns are important, but it isn’t enough just to look at raw numbers. Where is your traffic coming from? That’s one important criteria to look at.
If most of your traffic is coming from Yahoo! or MSN search, wouldn’t you like to know that? Particularly since most search traffic comes from Google. If you get a good percentage of your traffic from Facebook or BlogCatalog, you’d like to know that too, wouldn’t you?
Of course, there are other metrics to take a look at as you analyze your web traffic:
- Page visits
- Unique visitors
- Length of time on your website
- Links clicked
- Purchases made
In the next couple of days we’ll talk about tools that you can use to measure your traffic, but for now you need to realize the importance of this activity. That is particularly true since most of your competition likely isn’t doing it. But you can have a leg up on your competition just by knowing who your visitors are. And you really want the reality of your web traffic to match your targeting efforts. Don’t you? Of course you do.
